One of the most charming cottages on the Yorkshire coast began project life as a blank canvas for artist Martin Decent to make his mark.

It had long been a dream with wife Diana to have a home here in Robin Hoods Bay, where the couple had holidayed when their children were young.

As they began work on Greenfield Cottage some six years ago, the first job had been to remove all trace of its 1930s-style decor and strip it back to its Victorian brickwork.

Then, says Martin, he had a hand in ‘some form of decorating’.

Every room over the three floors of this three-bedroom cottage has been artfully redesigned, with quirky touches and vivid insights. There are Victorian fittings and glass chandeliers, driftwood and portholes and an ammonite collection that comes with the sale.

The tiles in the bathroom were found in France some 30 years ago, along with 17th century original oak panelling which was brought back to Yorkshire on the family car’s roof rack.

The tiles on the fireplace are ‘Pugin’, as used in the Houses of Parliament.
