Carlos Corberán's appointment a risk worth taking for Huddersfield Town, insists Terriers chief executive Mark Devlin

The 37-year-old was confirmed as the new first-team coach at Huddersfield on Thursday night, joining from Leeds United where he was an assistant to Marcelo Bielsa and the manager of the Whites Under-23s side. The sacking of Danny Cowley last Sunday was met with frustration by much of the Terriers fan base but Devlin feels that there is now a sense of excitement following Corberán's arrival. Huddersfield said they were not taking any applications for the manager's job following Cowley's dismissal, suggesting that Corberán was high on their list of potential targets. “I think everyone is really excited. I met and had a good conversation with Carlos. He’s incredibly passionate and really excited about the job," Devlin told Huddersfield Town TV. “We are excited about what he’s going to bring to the club. We all know it’s a little bit of a risk and it’s been a hectic week, but we think we’ve made the right appointment and have an excellent first-team coach. “We think Carlos’s attitude towards football, his philosophy, the way he is with players, and his approach is exactly right for the club.” Corberán played a key role at Leeds in transitioning players from the Under-23s to the first team, something Huddersfield feel will help their academy players' progression. Huddersfield have faced a challenging two years, suffering relegation from the Premier League and only securing their survival in the Championship in the penultimate game of the campaign. Corberán will be the fourth man in the John Smith's Stadium dugout in just over 18 months but Devlin feels that the Spaniard "ticks all the boxes". Devlin continued: “We want to operate with a head coach. We want someone who will work really hard with all our players, take an interest in not only the first team but some of our fantastic youngsters we’ve got coming through. “We’ve got someone who cares passionately and wants to work on the pitch and wants to concentrate on that part of the job. “Carlos’s appointment ticks all the boxes we are looking for in terms of his style of football, coaching mentality, open mindedness. We are all on the same page. “It’s important that after two difficult years we start pulling in the right direction. We are excited for the future of this club and the direction we are heading. “I sense that there’s now a real buzz around the place and a feeling that we are all moving together on this.” The Town chief executive believes Corberán will help Huddersfield produce a more attractive style of play and the type of football the Huddersfield faithful will enjoy watching. The 2020-21 Championship season will begin on September 12 with it hoped that some fans will be allowed back into stadia by October 1, however, with social distancing measures set to be in place, only a third of supporters will be allowed access. “It wouldn’t be right of us to appoint him for all his attributes and then make it difficult to achieve what we are all looking for which is fast-paced, high-pressed, attacking football, which will excite the fans," he added. “There’s a degree of risk with everything in football and there is risk, but there will be some really exciting football that the fans will want to watch.” Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
