Rail detonators spark safety alarm

EXPLOSIVES used by rail workers to warn train drivers of hazards on the line have been stolen from a train depot, prompting a stark warning from police.

British Transport Police said several of the detonators were stolen from a freight train parked in a yard in Doncaster last weekend. Red flags and keys were also taken.

Detonators are used to warn of the presence of engineers or other dangers. Police said they are safe if handled correctly, but are triggered by impact and make a loud bang when trains pass over them.

The detonators are small yellow discs two inches in diameter with two lead strips either side.

Pc Graham Maughan said: “They could be very dangerous in untrained hands, particularly young children or teenagers who may see them as a source of fun or entertainment.
