York City sank further towards relegation from the Football League despite a valiant second-half fightback in Devon.
Jackie McNamara’s men trailed 3-0 at half-time at the promotion-chasing Argyle before Russell Penn and Luke Summerfield from the penalty spot gave the Minstermen hope.
Jamille Matt, Reuben Reid from the penalty spot and a William Boyle own goal had put Plymouth in complete control at the break.
York remain seven points from safety with seven games to go.
