Shannon's mother Karen Matthews was thrust into the spotlight as she spearheaded the search for her missing daughter over three weeks.
Mrs Matthews, 32, made repeated emotional appeals for her daughter's safe return. The mother-of-seven, believed Shannon had been taken and voiced fears that someone she knew may have been involved.

THE FATHER

Shannon's natural father Leon Rose, 29, vowed to search for his daughter until she was found.

Mr Rose, of Kirkburton, Huddersfield, believed Shannon may have been trying to reach him when she disappeared. Last week he appealed to anyone who was holding Shannon to "examine their conscience".

THE STEPFATHER

Shannon's stepfather Craig Meehan, 22, faced the glare of public attention after speaking out in the media to insist that he had nothing to do with the nine-year-old's disappearance.

He told a national newspaper he was speaking out because he knew friends and family were "pointing the finger." He has been at by Mrs Matthews's side throughout the ordeal.

THE POLICEMAN

Det Supt Andy Brennan led the investigation into Shannon's disappearance. He said the search for the nine-year-old Dewsbury schoolgirl was being treated like a murder inquiry.

As the days passed Det Supt Brennan said he had become gravely concerned that Shannon had "fallen into the wrong hands".
