NORTH Yorkshire, Calderdale and East Riding remained the region's best performing education authorities as they moved into the nation's top 20 in the latest primary school league tables.
Schools in North Yorkshire celebrated their best ever English, maths and science test results for 11-year-olds.

The county council was best performer in the region and is now ranked joint 15th in a league table of 150 local authorities in the coun
try.

Hear education correspondent John Roberts debate the issues-------------------------------------------

Coun John Watson, executive member for children and young people's services, said: "This is a great achievement and a tribute to the effectiveness of our children and young people's service, its schools and all their staff, and the hard work of all the children."

The county's English test scores saw the biggest rise with 84 per cent of North Yorkshire pupils reaching the expected grade – a rise of more than two per cent on the previous year.

Coun Watson said: "This very significant improvement means that North Yorkshire goes up from a national ranking in English of 28th out of 150 to 12th."

Calderdale schools were also celebrating success as four primaries saw all of their 11-year-old pupils reaching the expected level in the key stage two results.

Every pupil at Salterlee Primary in Halifax, St John's CE Primary in Clifton, Brighouse, St Mary's CE Primary in Sowerby Bridge and Triangle CE Primary near Sowerby Bridge achieved level four results in English, maths and science.

Calderdale and East Riding of Yorkshire finished a place below North Yorkshire in the national rankings.

Yorkshire's next best performers were York and Leeds.

Calderdale Council's portfolio holder for children and young people's services, Coun Craig Whittaker, said: "We have had outstanding results and this is all down to the head teachers, teachers, governors, the tremendous effort by our pupils and the link between the council and our schools. There has been a lot of hard work and we are delighted with the results."
