Richard Buck from York was in top form at the Northern Championships at Manchester at the weekend.
He comfortably took the 400m title in 46.23secs before he travels to France as a member of the 4x400m relay squad for next weekend's European Cup.

The time, not far outside his best, was the same as he ran in Geneva recently and the win complete
s a hat-trick of titles for Buck at this distance.

Matt Barton (Leeds City) successfully defended his triple jump title.

Hampered by injuries this season, Barton beat Yorkshire champion David Budd (Sheffield) with a jump of 15.11m, just 10 centimetres outside his best.

In the women's 100m hurdles Zara Hohn (Wakefield) confirmed her return to form clocking 13.98 into a strong headwind to defeat defending champion Kate Read (Liverpool) and also took the silver medal in the 100m flat in 12.36.

Amy Hill (Sheffield) won the women's shot (13.20m) beating Leeds City's Hannah Evenden (12.36).

Evenden bounced back to win the Under-20 discus with a throw of 42.39. She also picked up silver medals in the women's discus (41.97) and the Under-20 shot (12.18) and a bronze in the Under-20 hammer (45.10).

On a day of sunshine but with strong winds blowing against the sprinters, just one championship record was broken on the first day.

The longest standing record on the books, the shot putt, was set as long ago as 1962 by the legendary Yorkshireman Arthur Rowe (Doncaster PW) at 18.81.

Carl Myerscough (Blackpool) finally erased that mark with 19.87.

A high quality Under-20 men's 2,000m steeplechase, where five of the field rank currently in the UK top 10, was won by Leeds City's James Wilkinson who went below 6:00.00 for the first time, crossing the line in 5:53.76.

Another Leeds junior, Umar Hameed, took gold in the 100m clocking 11.03

Matthew Hunt (Kingston upon Hull) in the junior men's javelin, confirmed his good early season form with another throw in excess of 60m and yet again improving his lifetime best to 62.26.
