Sheffield's Jessica Ennis got the better of her heptathlon rival Kelly Sotherton in both the high jump and hurdles at the EIS over the weekend.
Ennis won the high jump title with a superb series of jumps culminating in a clearance of 1.92m.

She even made a decent attempt at 1.96 and can do little wrong at present. Sotherton was third with 1.79. In the 60m hurdles, Ennis finished third in
8.20secs with Sotherton one place behind.

City of York's Richard Buck gave another outstanding performance to win the UK indoor 400m title.

After breaking his indoor best with 47.72 in the semi-final, Buck crossed the line in the final in a new best time of 46.53 to win from the much-fancied Steve Green.

Buck led at the halfway stage which he reached in under 22 seconds and powered away from that point on.

He opened up a gap over the chasing pack and it was a gap that they could not close. The York man was never in danger although Green reined him in slightly down the home straight.

Buck is now certain of his place in the British team for the World Indoor Championships in Valencia.

Another local performer to impress was Leeds City's Richard Strachan, who ran a strong race to snatch the bronze medal with 47.99.

Sam Ellis (Barnsley-Sheffield) took the bronze medal in the 800m. After a scrappy start from the outside lane, Ellis got himself into a good position behind Richard Hill. When Hill made his effort Ellis was well-placed, but could not close the gap and then lost the silver medal to Damien Moss.

Middlesborough's Chris Tomlinson did not get close to his new UK indoor record of 8.18m in the long jump, but he did not need to. His fourth-round effort of 7.80 was good enough for victory and he is now also heading to Valencia next month.
