LEEDS City dominated the Northern six-stage road relay championship at Hartlepool on Saturday, retaining their title by over two minutes.
Chris Birchall (16:28) gave them a sound start finishing eighth on the first leg which was won by Holmfirth's Matthew Pierson in 15:58. Adam Grice (15:59) took them to second and then leading junior James Wilkinson gave them a substantial lead at the
halfway stage with a 16:00 clocking.

From then the Leeds squad went further ahead through internationals James Walsh (15:53) and Alan Buckley (16:02) before veteran Darren Bilton, on his customary anchor stage, brought the Leeds team home with a fine solo run of 16:08. Altrincham and Morpeth were second and third respectively.

For logistical reasons the event hosted the Yorkshire Championship, a one-off situation which was less than satisfactory. Leeds, for instance, had athletes with allegiance to Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire and so were not eligible for the county title. As it happened, it made no difference. So strong are Leeds at present that their B team beat all the other Yorkshire clubs to take the county title. They held off a strong challenge from Bingley for whom Chris Cariss (15:52) ran a storming last leg.

Hallamshire, too, had a non-Yorkshire runner in their squad leaving North York Moors to take their first Yorkshire medals.

Chester le Street comfortably retained their women's four-stage title from Kendal. Scunthorpe, given a fine start by Nicola Geddes (12:41), runner-up on the opening stage, took bronze ahead of Bingley. The Bingley squad took the Yorkshire title from Leeds City and defending champions Hallamshire.
