A storming performance by City of Sheffield saw them win the second British League Division 1 meeting at Carlisle on Saturday and open up a two-point lead at the top of the table.
Not surprisingly, Sheffield took maximum points in the 400m with Beijing relay hopeful Richard Buck, pictured right, having little problem winning the A race in 47.19 and John Kelley was comfortably clear in the B race clocking 48.56.

Sam Ellis, r
unning into form with a fast time in Milan recently, warmed up for the Olympic trials next weekend with an 800m victory in 1:51.02.

The strong pole vault pairing of Luke Cutts (5m)and Rhys Searles (4.60) took top points as did David Budd (14.79) and Graeme Matthews (14.43) in the triple jump. Jamie Williamson won the discus by nearly seven metres with a throw of 49.16 with Daniel Brunt runner up in the B event (41.75).

These two, always big contributors to the Sheffield cause, also scored well in the shot, Williamson finishing second with 15.79 and Brunt winning the B contest with 14.68.

Leeds City were comfortable winners of the second British League (Division 3) at their home venue, South Leeds Stadium, on Saturday.

Their winning margin over Kingston and Polytechnic was 61 points, not quite as much as their margin in the first match but putting them in line for promotion at the halfway stage of the competition.

Umar Hameed gave Leeds a great start in the spints winning a double, clocking 11.0 in the 100m and 21.6 against a significant headwind in the 200m. There was a win too for the consistent Rhys Smith in the 400m, getting a narrow verdict in 49.3.

Michael Salter ran a perfectly judged race to win the B 800m in 1:55.7 while Simon Deakin won the B 1,500m for Leeds in 4:00.4.

James Walsh, who runs for Britain in the European Mountain Championships, was in top form with an easy 5000m victory in 14:24.9.

There were maximum points for Leeds in the javelin, their best field event.

Matt Allison threw 55.30 for a four-metre victory and Ben Sleigh was five metres clear winning the B event with a throw of 48.25. Allison also picked up useful points with third place in both the shot and discus.

In the UK Women's League (Division 3), Wakefield, fifth in the opening match, did better this time finishing third in their home fixture at Thornes Park on Saturday.

In a close match, they were just two points away from second place in a fixture in which Wakefield were particularly strong in the middle distance events.

Charlene Thomas, who will be bidding for an Olympic place in the 1500m, opted for the 3000m and romped away in a time of 9:4.3 with Julie Briscoe making it maximum points for Wakefield, winning the B race in 10:14.2.

Helen Singleton was just as impressive in the 1500m, winning in 4:30.1 with her Wakefield team-mate Katie McHale winning the B race (4:44.1). And in the 800m Kelly Johnson outclassed the opposition with a win in 2:09.5.

The best Wakefield field event performance came from Fiona Thomas who won the shot with 11.25m.

Leeds City won the third round match in the Northern League (Division 1) at Wakefield yesterday.

Tyson Gay's dream of competing for a 100 metres and 200m double in Beijing is over after he collapsed with "severe cramp" during his 200m quarter-final at the US Olympic Team Track & Field Trials.

Gay, the 100m and 200m world champion, appeared to trip 40 metres into the opening heat at Hayward Field.

He landed heavily on the track and stayed down as the race continued before being helped off the track on a stretcher wheeled by medical staff.

USA Track & Field officials said the initial diagnosis found Gay's injury was not as serious as first feared.

"It was a severe cramp of his left hamstring," a USATF official said. "There is no apparent damage otherwise. He has a little bit of 'road rash' from the fall and he's at the hotel resting."
