FA CUP semi-finalists Barnsley are still not out of Championship relegation trouble after suffering a sixth successive defeat to fellow strugglers Leicester City.
A win would have ensured safety for the Reds but Iain Hume's second-half goal gave the
Foxes a much-needed double.
Barnsley manager Simon Davey reverted to a 4-4-2 formation with Martin Devaney replacing Jamal Campbell-Ryce on the right of midfield and Daniel Nardiello selected in place of Kayode Odejayi to partner Jon Macken up front.
Leicester made three changes to the side which struggled to a 1-1 draw with relegated Colchester, including bringing in Iain Hulme, who scored the equaliser, up front for DJ Campbell.
Much of the first half was a midfield battle but Barnsley went close with a shot on the turn from Macken and Nardiello's downward header from the resulting corner was cleared inside the six-yard area.
Rob Kozluk was booked for a foul on Lee Hendrie before Devaney cracked a 25-yarder against a post shortly before half-time.
Hendrie limped off and his replacement, Barry Hayles, was immediately carded for a challenge on Kozluk, looking uncomfortable at left-back.
Barnsley should have struck immediately after the break when Diego Leon lashed his shot against the outside of the post after Richard Stearman had made a hash of an attempted
clearance.
Hayles hooked wide at the other end after Steve Howard's shot had been blocked but the
Foxes took a 72nd-minute lead when Hayles held off Nyatanga to make the space for
Hume to squeeze home his 10th goal of the season from close range.
Davey brought on attacking trio Odejayi, Campbell-Ryce and Michael Coulson but to no
avail.
Macken shot narrowly wide from 12 yards and Leon struck a free-kick wide.
