The Tykes, who beat Liverpool and Chelsea en route to last season's FA Cup semi-final, visit League One side Crewe Alexandra tonight in the first round of the Carling Cup.
Captain Stephen Foster, who spent 13 years with Crewe, said: "The Cup is al
l about upsets and we have to make sure that we are not on the receiving end of one
"We got a lot of attention last season for what we did in the FA Cup – and we brought some money into the club – it is important that we do well again."
Reflecting on his time at Gresty Road, Foster said: "Going back to Crewe is something that will be very enjoyable. I still keep in touch with a couple of the lads who were in the same youth teams as me and it will be a good night.
"I have some great memories and will always be grateful for my time there. Dario (Gradi) is a great coach and probably the hardest working man in football.
"They will come out and play their football. It will be a difficult test, but if we play anywhere near to our potential then I would fancy us against anyone."
Barnsley manager Simon Davey has no plans to field a weakened side although defender Marciano van Hommet is banned after being sent off in the opening-day Championship defeat at QPR. Crewe opened their campaign with a home defeat against Brighton.
Last six games: Crewe LWWLLL, Barnsley WLLWLL
Referee: A Taylor (Greater Manchester).
Last time: Crewe 2 Barnsley 0; December 14, 2002, League One.
