A Splendid Exchange
William Bernstein (Atlantic hardback, £22)
Migration, language, engineering, medicine: would anyone have bothered doing anything if there hadn't been the promise of a pile of tools, some gold coins or US dollars involved?
William Bernstein takes us on a journey from these exchanges to the present world, where we enjoy luxuries manufactured on the other side of the planet.
Bernstein's perspective is engaging. A history of trade is really the history of mankind, but Bernstein's book matches this lofty ambition.
