Review: The Lost Dog

While the plot of this story is simple – Tom Loxley loses his dog and tries to find it – Michelle de Kretser weaves between Tom's current life in Australia and memories of his childhood in India, resulting in a captivating read.
It's beautifully written – Tom's relationship with his mother and love interest Nelly are described in detail, revealing a lonely man who takes pleasure in words until Nelly teaches him to appreciate the visual.
The main letdown is the book's lack of a firm resolution, and in parts it became bogged down with pretentiousness.
Every scene needs to be imagined with the brain switched on.
But I could read this book 10 times and get a new perspective each time. It's simply riveting.
