ADI at helm of pioneering TV system to help patients
A YORKSHIRE research and development organisation is leading a £1.5m project to develop a new communication system for patients and doctors.
The Advanced Digital Institute (ADI), based in Saltaire, is developing a tele-health consultation system to help doctors and carers talk to patients in their own homes, reducing the number of patients having to travel to and from hospitals.
The technology, which will be a television-based video telephony system, is being developed with a number of partners including Bradford-based Red Embedded Design, which has been developing a television-based videophone telephony service.
Other partners include technology firm BTL, also based in Bradford, which is developing interactive e-learning applications for the service.
The system will be initially trialled by the Airedale NHS Trust, another partner in the consortium, in the hope that it will eventually be rolled out across the country.
John Eaglesham, chief executive of ADI, said, "This is an exciting project which will change the way patients receive care in the home whilst also providing numerous economic and social benefits."
The research project will involve further developing the technology to provide a more interactive consultation experience for the patient and doctor, including cameras with zoom and pan controls, and connection to a streaming video server providing video information clips to patients.
The project is being supported with funding from the UK Technology Strategy Board under their Assisted Living Innovation Platform programme.
Jackie Marshall-Cyrus, the Technology Strategy Board's assisted living specialist, said: "Once developed, this system will have the potential to bring social and economic benefits to the UK, and could be used around the world. We are delighted to offer our support."
ADI, which employs 12 people, is funded by a 2m Yorkshire Forward contract, as well as support from Bradford Council, Airedale Partnership, and EU Regional Fund.
Mr Eaglesham said: "As a region, Yorkshire has historically not done a lot of research and development. The ADI was set up to increase the amount of research and development done and in that broad digital technology sector with the aim of fast growth."
