Alliance to test the health of the NHS

TWO York firms have joined forces to set up a company that measures the effectiveness of new initiatives in the NHS.

RedBlack Software and CMA Associates formed Prosum Alliance, which provides software to hospitals and other NHS organisations.

Its Prosum service is designed to demonstrate when changes have led to an improvement in patients' health and to show if they are providing a safe and effective service.

Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Health Authority is running a pilot project looking at the effect of initiatives from central Government. If successful it could be used in the rest of England.

The project involves Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Airedale Hospital and Bradford District Care Trust, all of which are due to start using Prosum software in April.

Mark Limber, from CMA, which provides change management and support to the healthcare market, said: "Prosum Alliance is a good marriage between two local companies and RedBlack is a very well-known software company in York focused on rapid, successful software development. We are focused on delivering improvements into the NHS."

Jane Tyler, managing director of RedBlack, which delivers business management systems to more than 100 firms in the UK, said: "We have relished the challenge of creating a tool that can be so useful to the NHS, which is, after all, Europe's biggest business."

Central government sets the NHS a multitude of directives and targets and Prosum wants to change the way NHS managers measure the benefits of these initiatives. Staff will be able to easily define the benefits they are interested in and capture data instead of dealing with disparate information, often on paper, from multiple sources.

Adrian King, business systems manager, corporate assurance, Humber Mental Health Teaching NHS Trust, which was the first NHS organisation to install the Prosum benefits management software in October last year, said: "We now are able to gather information that demonstrates project outputs and the way in which they will support programme and strategic objectives at all levels."
