Benn tells businesses to cut carbon emissions
THE Secretary of State for the Environment has told businesses to "get on with it" and invest in reducing carbon emissions.
Hilary Benn, MP for Leeds Central, made the comments during a debate organised by Oxfam and the Stop Climate Chaos coalition at Leeds Civic Hall on Friday.
He was joined by Shadow Transport Minister Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby; the joint leader of Leeds City Council, Richard Brett; and Oxfam's head of campaigns, Martin Kirk.
Mr Benn said: "Any business thinking about the current circumstances and the future would by now be pretty clear that it is going to be the low carbon (businesses] that are successful.
"If you can reduce your energy consumption you save yourself money as well as contributing to saving the planet.
"If you lose less resources you are saving yourself money and making yourself more efficient.
"Businesses thinking about the medium and the long term ought to realise that this is an investment worth making. Preparing for climate change, investing in reducing the use of resources is what any sensible business ought to be doing now.
"They are not saying they waited for the Government to pay for it, they are getting on and making it happen."
The event was chaired by Yorkshire Post business editor Bernard Ginns.
