Brand will stay in the UK as Leeds firm signs deal
A West Yorkshire building manufacturer has saved a popular construction brand from extinction by buying it from a German chemical giant.
Everbuild Building Products, a major producer of sealants, adhesives, fillers and building chemicals, has acquired the
Feb brand, products and formulas, for a six-figure sum, from BASF.
The deal ensures the 200-strong product range will still be manufactured in the UK. BASF said last year that it was to close its Manchester-based Feb subsidiary. Leeds-based Everbuild has also acquired Feb's Aquaseal brand and product formulations.
Feb products will be manufactured with Everbuild's other ranges at its factory in Leeds, where it employs more than 220 people.
A separate division has been created for Feb, which will be run by a specialist team.
David Seymour, managing director of Everbuild, said: "The acquisition of the Feb and Aquaseal brand names ensures that a respected part of construction industry heritage is not consigned to the history books and remains an active part of UK manufacturing.
"When we became aware that Feb might disappear, we approached BASF, and I am very pleased we have been able to not only save the brand, but keep its manufacture in the UK.
"Everbuild has the manufacturing capacity to handle both ranges. Feb still has the best brand awareness for construction chemicals among builders in the UK, and we intend to ensure it has a bright future."
Feb has been in production for almost 60 years and its concrete and mortar admixes have been popular with builders, but the economic downturn has fuelled a rise in demand for DIY superstores' own-brand products.
Everbuild, set up in 1994, serves the construction, building maintenance, plumbing and DIY sectors. The firm has a turnover of 47m and is a leading supplier to building merchants and construction industry distributors. It makes sealants, adhesives, fillers and building chemicals and also has an operation in Dublin.
