Business welcome for delay to agency worker directive

BUSINESS leaders in Yorkshire have welcomed the Government announcement to postpone new regulations.

Ministers will delay the implementation of an EU directive affecting the use of agency workers and new legislation allowing some staff to have time off for civic duties and training.

Chambers of commerce feared the rules would heap more red tape onto businesses as they fight the recession. Nick Pontone, the policy director of Yorkshire and Humber chambers, said: "Today's decision is a welcome boost for business.

"Our research shows that new regulations introduced since 1998 have cost firms in Yorkshire 5.7bn and any additional burdens would hinder the recovery.

"Creating jobs will be at the top of the agenda as we emerge from recession and any measures which can reduce the red tape and cost of taking on new staff will receive our support." He added: "The Government should use every tool at its disposal to help businesses get back to growth.

"Helping businesses succeed is by far the best way to get unemployment down and tackle the deficit by rebuilding tax revenues."

Mr Pontone urged the Government to abandon the hike in employers' national insurance contributions planned for 2011 and introduce a moratorium on any new employment legislation during the next Parliament.
