Cheesemaker seals two major supermarket deals
A RENOWNED cheesemaker has launched a series of new products after clinching two deals with major supermarkets.
Wensleydale Dairy Products, owners of the Creamery at Hawes, is to sell its new Wensleydale Cheese recipes to Waitrose, and Colman's mustard-flavoured Cheddar to Tesco.
The cheeses have all been made available first at Campbells, the Leyburn supermarket.
The producer used the Dales Festival of Food and Drink, which was held in Leyburn, to launch five cheeses, including some more esoteric flavours: new recipe Wensleydale Blue; Real Wensleydale cheese with Fairtrade mango and pineapple; Real Wensleydale cheese made with Fairtrade banana and honey; Real Wensleydale cheese made with Fairtrade mango and honey; and Hawes Creamery Cheddar cheese with Colman's wholegrain mustard.
David Hartley, managing director of Wensleydale Dairy Products, said: "The festival is a vital part of the calendar for rural businesses like ours.
"This year, thousands of people were able to taste our new recipes before they appear in supermarkets throughout the UK, and the cheese received a great reaction.
"Business is excellent, with innovative new products being made available to a wider range of supermarkets.
"Together with our best-selling traditional recipes, these new cheeses promise to take the business forward and deliver growth in the year ahead," he said.
The festival was launched in 2002 in response to the damage inflicted on Yorkshire's rural economy during the outbreak of foot-and-mouth in 2001.
