Construction industry has 'image problem', says expert
An "image problem" in the construction industry is behind its failure to attract the best young talent, according to a partner at KPMG in Leeds.
John Campbell, property and construction tax partner, was speaking after publication of KPMG's 2008 Global Construction Survey.
The report revealed that while chronic skills shortages continue to plague the industry, two-thirds think their own company is on track with recruitment.
Mr Campbell said: "It is surprising that the industry believes that individually they are doing enough, but as a whole it is deficient.
"Surely it is time for some collective action starting with a fresh approach to recruiting in order to attract the best graduates in a very challenging global environment.
"The construction industry must take positive steps to combat the image problem it recognises it has, if it is to compete for the best graduates.
"The war for talent should start way before the graduate recruitment rounds. Learning the lessons of other industries would see a positive and attractive image being built while potential employees are still at school, rather than waiting until they are graduating."
The survey said other challenges faced by the industry include failing risk management, escalating costs and tough new environmental standards.
