Customers attracted by EDF Energy
Energy provider EDF Energy said yesterday it had seen a 9 per cent rise in UK customer numbers during 2006, despite increased competition between energy providers as prices spiralled across the board.
French-owned EDF, which supplies more than five million UK customers, said sales volumes had risen over the period after the net addition of 450,000 new accounts.
The figures emerged as the group published a 24.5 per cent increase in UK sales to 8.32 billion euros (5.57bn) during the year, up from 6.68 billion euros (4.47bn) in 2005.
The group said the bulk of the sales increase came directly from a jump in prices as the firm looked to offset rising wholesale costs.
During the year EDF raised its gas prices by 14.7 per cent and electricity by 4.7 per cent in March, and then again by 19 per cent and 8 per cent respectively in July. The lift in prices saw average household gas bills for the year come in at 641, with electricity bills at 357.
