Decision time over the award winners

LEADING figures from Yorkshire's business community met yesterday to decide the winners of this year's Variety Club Business Awards.

Despite the recession, the judges were impressed with the high quality of companies and individuals nominated for awards.

They discussed candidates for Board of the Year, Business Leader of the Year and Small Business of the Year.

The judging panel consisted of David Buckley, the head of Ernst & Young's Yorkshire practice; David Forbes, the managing director of NM Rothschild & Sons; Peter Garnham, the managing director of YFM Venture Finance; Bernard Ginns, the business editor of the Yorkshire Post; Richard Gregory, the chairman of Yorkshire Bank; Bernard Hoggarth, the chief executive of Cranswick; Martin Shaw, the head of corporate, Europe at Pinsent Masons; Les Tench, the chairman of SIG; John Wakeford, the managing director of Hitchenor Wakeford; and Peter Wilkinson, the chief executive of InTechnology. The event, which is supported by the Yorkshire Post and executive search firm Hitchenor Wakeford, takes place this year on December 11.

The Variety Club will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to an individual who is recognised as having made an outstanding contribution to the country in his or her area of activity.

The YFM Group is sponsoring the small business award. The other sponsors are Bartlett Insurance Brokers, Ernst & Young, Pace, Evans Property Group, Pinsent Masons and Rothschild.

The annual awards raise money for disadvantaged children across Yorkshire and have raised nearly 3m over the last two decades.
