Depuy buys implants rival Finsbury
A MULTINATIONAL medical implants company has acquired an orthopaedic implant manufacturer a month after it announced it is axing its Yorkshire manufacturing base.
DePuy Orthopaedics has acquired Finsbury Ortho-paedics, a private manufacturer and global distributor of orthopaedic implants based in Surrey, for an undisclosed sum.
The deal will add new products to DePuy's range of implants.
Last month DePuy announced that about 280 jobs are under threat after it decided to stop manufacturing in Leeds.
The company, part of the Johnson & Johnson group, plans to "rationalise its product portfolio" by focusing on the products surgeons and patients need most.
Most of the work currently carried out in Leeds is to be transferred to DePuy's site in Cork, Ireland, by the end of 2010.
The company said that products manufactured in Leeds would not be transferred to a Finsbury location and the decision to move manufacturing from Beeston was not related to the acquisition of Finsbury.
Last month DePuy's worldwide vice-president of manufacturing Patrick Brady said the decision to close the manufacturing site in Beeston was "based on a combination of factors".
"Significant among them," he added, "is the company's decision to discontinue sales of a line of products for hip replacement and resurfacing because demand has declined in favour of the company's newer technology options for restoring mobility.
"Other products will be rationalised in line with changing market needs."
