Enterprise is alive and kicking beside the seaside
SCARBOROUGH is officially the most enterprising place in Yorkshire and the Humber, after beating off competition from across the region.
The seaside town was yesterday named the regional winner of the Government's Enterprising Britain competition.
Enterprising Britain 2008 was organised by Make Your Mark on behalf of the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), in partnership with regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.
Now in its fourth year, the competition celebrates places of enterprise excellence that have helped transform the social and economic fortunes of their area.
Scarborough was selected in recognition of its economic turnaround in recent years and will now go forward to the national competition.
The decline of traditional industries like fishing and long stay tourism had affected Scarborough's economy but since 2002 the town has changed as a result of its renaissance programme that has helped to create new public and business spaces.
Since the programme was launched, the town has attracted over 200m in private sector investment.
Linda Pollard, deputy chairman of Yorkshire Forward and chairman of the regional competition selection panel, said: "This region has for centuries been a centre of enterprise and has a rich history of entrepreneurs. Places like Scarborough help the region to emphasise and grow this important part of our economy and culture."
Jim Dillon, chief executive of Scarborough Borough Council, added: "This is great news and simply reflects where Scarborough is going.
"We have earned a reputation for engaging with the public, creating a clear vision about where we want to go and delivering our ambitions."
