First aid specialist to increase training team

A FIRST AID training company set up by a former paramedic is set to create 20 new jobs and increase turnover by 60 per cent after moving into new purpose-built headquarters.

First on Scene Training, has moved into 5,200 sq ft offices and storage space at City View in Bradford from the offices it had outgrown in Idle.

The company specialises in supplying emergency professionals to deliver life-saving training to the public and private sector, including Leeds and Bradford City Councils, Ikea, Greggs and Next.

The business, which employs 30 staff, was set up by former paramedic Nigel Barraclough 10 years ago after a back injury lifting a Bradford Bulls player left him unable to continue active paramedic duties.

This year, after a £15k grant from Bradford Council’s Kickstart enterprise service to help it relocate, the company expects to hit a £1.6m turnover.

Mr Barraclough said: “I realised there was huge potential for emergency service-led first aid training courses and it’s this professional element to our offering which has been the cornerstone of our success.”

The firm also publishes and supplies “First Aid Made Easy” training manuals, which are sold to over 2,000 first aid training providers and used by over half a million students each year, generating 50 per cent of the company’s income.

Mr Barraclough added: “The success of my first aid books allowed me to expand my team of trainers. Being particular about only employing former emergency service professionals hampered my growth initially, but we now have such a strong reputation in the industry, emergency crews come to us to add a new dimension to the career they love.”

The company delivers training to over 100 venues across the UK. Mr Barraclough said the move to new premises means it now has the capacity to introduce more training locally.

Mr Barraclough said: “Businesses recognise that first aid training is essential and can go far beyond the bandage and sling cliché.”
