GO Outdoors' great expansion

OUTDOOR retailer GO Outdoors plans to create 1,000 new retail jobs over the next two years starting with three new stores including one in West Yorkshire.

Sheffield-based GO Outdoors will invest a total of 5m in the three new store openings creating more than 150 new jobs.

The retailer is keen to cash in on the growing number of holidaymakers who are taking country holidays close to home during the recession.

By June 2009, it plans to open a total of five new stores since the 18m refinancing package set up with Bank of Scotland Corporate in Spring 2008.

The group is hoping to have 30 stores open by 2011.

The company has earmarked stores in West Yorkshire, the North East and the South East, but isn't giving out any details until the contracts are signed.

GO Outdoors is on target to operate 14 stores by the end of June with each store selling more than 20,000 big-brand outdoor products.

John Graham, GO Outdoors managing director, said: "We actively seek low-rent off-pitch locations and the money we save is passed on to our customers.

"That's why we guarantee to beat any price on any stock item sold by any of our competitors. The guarantee includes the biggest outdoor brands. It's not a promise we make lightly – but GO Outdoors customers know that if they buy from us they won't find it cheaper anywhere else."

The company claims it can kit customers for any outdoor activity from walking the dog to conquering K2.

Typically customers need equipment for camping, cycling to work, riding down moun- tain paths, climbing and fish-ing.

David Hunt, director of commercial banking for Bank of Scotland Corporate in Sheffield, said: "This company is a fantastic example of a retail business that identified a niche and has stuck firmly to a winning formula through a combination of sound business practice linked to an entrepreneurial spirit."

GO Outdoors was founded more than 40 years ago with a single store in Sheffield. In 1998 it was the subject of a buy-in management buyout.

It has 11 stores across the UK – in Sheffield, Hathersage, Wakefield, Coventry, Oxford, Stockport, Loughborough, Wigan, Bristol, Wolverhampton and Coatbridge near Glasgow.

A new store in Stockton on Tees is due to open in late March.
