Green goes for biodiesel plant

GOES on Green, a Harrogate-based alternative energy company, has announced plans to develop a £30m biodiesel facility in North Shields, Tyne & Wear.

The company has applied for planning permission for the first phase of the project which is being backed by Al Tayyar Energy (ATE) – a clean energy development and investment company, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

ATE has a history of investing in alternative energy projects around the world. It will be the majority investor in GoG's project and has provided the initial financing.

The biodiesel plant is planned for a four-acre site at the Simon Storage terminal, an existing chemical/ petrochemical storage facility. The plant will break down a number of different materials to create bio-diesel including fats, greases and non-edible animal fats.

Dr Ing Giuseppe Simeone, chairman and co-founder of GoG, said: "By selecting a novel means of processing a wide range of feed stocks of fats and oils, we are opening up a new platform to expand biodiesel production in the UK and ultimately internationally."

Dr Granville Smith, chief executive of ATE, said: "Following over a year of intensive research into biodiesel technology, we are very excited about bringing this facility to Tyne & Wear and creating new jobs within a modern centre of production excellence. The UK has committed to achieving significant levels of biofuel production and is providing important incentives to support investment in this market, both of which have been important factors in ATE's decision to make its first global biodiesel investment in this country."

The market for the production of biodiesel remains in its infancy but is set for major growth. The UK has set a target of generating 5 per cent of total UK fuel sales from biofuels by 2010.
