Green light for growth at Humber port
A 70-ACRE development in Immingham, which could create up to 1,200 jobs, has been given the go-ahead by North-East Lincolnshire Council.
Planning permission has been approved for the 50m industrial and warehousing development, just off Queens Road, in Immingham, which will be developed over the next 15 years by Magna Holdings.
The company initially submitted plans last June to develop the site, creating more than 800,000 sq ft of major storage, industrial and warehousing facilities, distribution and storage units, a small amount of commercial office space and a fast-food outlet.
The first phase will involve clearing the gypsum lagoon, which currently covers the site.
Despite the current downturn in commercial property, Magna says, because of its port connections, that the development has already attracted enquiries from firms looking to expand.
Gareth Allen, of Colliers CRE, in Leeds, who are marketing the development, said: "With its close proximity to Immingham ports, this development is an ideal opportunity for both local and national businesses to acquire premises. We have even received interest from occupiers in Europe."
Digby Lovel, a director of Magna Holdings, said: "This development should be a massive success, as the phone has been ringing off the hook with interest from end-users, which is great news at this early stage."
The development aims to attract companies looking for storage and distribution facilities with strong port connections. Initial interest has included enquiries from steelworkers and engineering companies.
Martin Whiteley, managing director of Magna Holdings, said: "We have received enquiries from firms who wish to relocate to this area from other parts of the country, along with a number of existing businesses close to the site, who wish to expand.
"Economically, it will be a massive boost for the area, because once the site is sold it could create up to 1,200 jobs, as well as attracting major companies to Immingham."
He added: "There has been a huge amount of interest from companies who would like to relocate here, because of the quality of the scheme, designed by Ramsden and Partners architects, in Leeds."
The development is also a step towards realising the council's strategy to open up land for port-related use.
Magna's proposal, which will link to Stallingborough Kiln Lane industrial site, is part of the Eastgate project, which includes an upgrade of rail bridges by Network Rail and the possibility of deregulating the roads to make port-related use more efficient. There is also the possibility of financial assistance for companies who locate to this area.
