Hi-tech company in big MoD deal
SHEFFIELD has always been synonymous with steel, but it is also set to play a role in propelling frigates and submarines through stormy waters.
Magnomatics, a Sheffield-based company which specialises in the development of advanced magnetic transmission systems and hi-tech electrical machines, has signed a six-figure contract with the Ministry of Defence.
Magnomatics will carry out a design study of a magnetically geared propulsion motor, based on a device called the pseudo direct drive (PDD), which could ensure that the Royal Navy frigates and submarines of the future use less fuel.
A Magnomatics spokesman said: "It creates a more efficient motor which can also decrease the requirement for cooling systems, and potentially reduce the complexity of engine room systems."
The PDD takes up around half the space of an existing ship's propulsion motor.
The spokesman said: "Often it is useful to be able to position the motor as far to the rear of the vessel as possible, as this reduces the length of the propeller shaft, releasing valuable hull space and helping to make the craft less vulnerable."
The work for the MoD is due to be completed by the end of March 2010.
Magnomatics was founded in 2006.
