Jobs face axe as Clariant looks at cutting costs
AROUND 240 jobs are under threat at a Yorkshire chemicals company.
Global speciality chemicals company Clariant yesterday announced that it was entering a period of consultation with employee representatives regarding the future of the manufacturing and UK customer service organisation based at its site in Horsforth, near Leeds, which could lead to its closure.
In a statement, the company said: "The announcement is part of Clariant's European rationalisation programme to reduce costs in line with future business needs.
"It is also a response by the company to major structural changes made by our customers in the textile, leather and the paper sectors over recent years.
"Discussions with employee representatives and employees affected will commence shortly to consult about the company's proposals. No further statements will be made by Clariant until the consultation has concluded."
A spokesman for the trade union Unite, which has a number of members working in Clariant's site in Horsforth, said: "We are really concerned about the announcement but will reserve comment until we meet the company today."
Clariant Services UK is part of the global Clariant group which has 100 companies on five continents employing more than 20,000 staff. The headquarters are near Basel in Switzerland.
