Law firms link with Indian partners
Law firms from across Yorkshire will be gathering in Leeds today for a meeting with 20 Indian law firms which they hope will strengthen links with the thriving Indian legal sector.
The trade mission will highlight inward investment opportunities and give Yorkshire lawyers a chance to network with counterparts from India in the fields of corporate, commercial, intellectual property and commercial property law.
India last year overtook France as the third largest investor in the UK.
Jeremy Shulman, chairman of Leeds law firm Shulmans, said: "The visit is beneficial to both Leeds law firms as well as Indian firms in developing the global reach of our work.
"While London has traditionally been the central platform for international work, this visit highlights the fact that Leeds is also on the international map. India is a key international sector for UK lawyers.
"So many British clients are now doing business there. Shulmans' own international network Interlegal is working hard to build relationships in the Indian subcontinent."
The Law Society of England and Wales is organising the event at the Met hotel with UK Trade & Investment and Yorkshire Forward. Leeds Legal, a marketing initiative, hosts a lunch.
Law Society presient Paul Marsh said: "We're very pleased to host the Indian law firms. The society and its members are fully aware that few business will be cocooned from the effects of the economic downturn. The society is planning more relationship building visits between English and Indian law firms, in order to serve Indian investors better when they are looking to do business in the UK or elsewhere in the European Union."
