Learning how to deal with climate change

CLIMATE change is the focus of a conference in Hull aimed at helping companies work sustainably.

Law firm Andrew Jackson is holding the first East Yorkshire and Humber Climate Conference, on May 14. Speakers will talk about climate change, the environment, health and safety and waste management.

Julian Walker-Palin, Asda Wal-Mart corporate policy manager for sustainability, will discuss Asda's approach to sustainability, and Angela Todd, sustainable development manager for resource efficiency at Yorkshire Forward, will look at ways to profit from efficiency.

Other speakers include Dr David Calvert, from the Environmental Technologies Centre for Industrial Collaboration, who will consider the future of business sustainability; Professor Sheri Markose, from the Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents, who will talk about climate change and its impact on the economy in years to come; Niall Enright, director for climate change strategy at RPS Group, who

will consider the impact of sustainability on business profits, and Gary Gallen, head of Andrew Jackson's corporate investigation and governance unit, who will give an overview of the regulatory outlook and the latest legislation.

The conference takes place at the Ramada Jarvis Hull Hotel, in Willerby, and will be followed in the evening by a drinks reception, and dinner.

Organiser Matthew Breakell, of Andrew Jackson, said: "The unpredictable climate has certainly left its mark almost a year after floods hit the region, and businesses are finding themselves operating in an increasingly complex field.

"The aim of the conference is not to preach to businesses. Instead, we want to arm delegates with practical advice that will enable them to reach informed decisions about climate change while highlighting the benefits that a 'greener' approach may have on their businesses."

n To book a place at the conference, call Sam Moore on 01482 601298 or email climateconference@andrew jackson.co.uk. Tickets are 65, plus VAT, for single delegates or 600, plus VAT, for 10 delegates, including refreshments and lunch. Tickets for the drinks reception and dinner are 30, plus VAT, or 270, plus VAT, for 10 people.
