LinkedIn director to speak at Mafia summit

A SENIOR director at social networking group LinkedIn will discuss professional social media strategies at a major conference next month.

Wade Burgess, senior director of northern Europe at LinkedIn, is the latest speaker to be announced for the two-day Yorkshire Mafia Conference, which is being held at The Royal Armouries in Leeds on March 21 and 22.

Mr Burgess manages LinkedIn’s Hiring Solutions business, helping European employers find and attract talent at scale.

He joined LinkedIn in 2008 in the Corporate Solutions sales team in the US, before moving up to senior manager and then director of sales, central region.

He then moved to the UK as director of sales for Hiring Solutions in the UK and Ireland.

Mr Burgess will join other speakers at the event including Ivan Heneghan, from Facebook’s strategic client services team, and Ken Brook-Chrispin, chairman and chief executive of Seabrook Crisps.

He said: “There is so much noise and hype about social media and virality today that needs to be anchored with some common sense, practical resource constraints, and age-old business strategy.

“Rather than something shiny and new, this should be seen as a way to leverage the current professional platforms to extend the brand and strategy you have worked hard to develop.”

Geoff Shepherd, founder of the Yorkshire Mafia, said: “The Yorkshire Mafia’s humble beginnings started on LinkedIn so it’s very fitting to have Wade at the conference, helping other businesses get the best from the tool to meet new clients, develop a trusted network of suppliers and find new talent.

“Created in November 2008 with just 100 followers four months later, The Yorkshire Mafia now has a trusted following of more than 9,000 pre-approved members and is hosting its second business conference, one that will rival all others – it’s a great testament to how LinkedIn can be used to create something that is truly amazing.”

Mr Burgess added: “The Yorkshire Mafia has done a terrific job of utilising LinkedIn to build and grow a highly effective online group and offline event. I’m delighted to be presenting at what will likely be an energetic and informative event.”

The Yorkshire Post is the media partner for the conference. The free conference will feature 150 exhibitors. It is expected to attract more than 3,000 business professionals.
