MagicCote solves a sticky problem

Yorkshire firm MagicCote Cleaning UK has completed a project in Westminster Abbey to remove chewing gum from a fragile 1,000-year-old floor.

The company, based in Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire, uses an 'ice-blasting' machine to clean surfaces without harming them.

Many companies had tried and failed to restore the ancient slabs but were unable to treat them without causing damage.

Ian Carrison, the director of MagicCote Cleaning UK, said: "Our methods not only removed the gum safely from a test area, but also caused no damage or discolouration to the surface, so it blended with its surroundings. As a result we began work on the highly sensitive area within Westminster Abbey."

MagicCote is a fourth-generation family business. The company was started as a window cleaning firm before the Second World War by Mr Carrison's grandfather.
