MIPIM gets preview of new Leeds waterside development
DRAMATIC proposals to regenerate a historic waterside site near the centre of Leeds will be unveiled at the MIPIM property fair in Cannes tomorrow.
Waterside regeneration specialist ISIS is behind the "urban village" proposal for the Tower Works site. It would include 145,000 sq ft of offices, 154 studio and family homes, an artisan bakery, an organic micro brewery, bars, cafes and public open spaces.
Leeds Civic Architect John Thorp will outline to MIPIM delegates the role Tower Works will play in the regeneration of Holbeck Urban Village as a thriving business and residential community close.
Heavily influenced by the art and architecture of the Italian renaissance, Tower Works was originally built as a factory owned by Colonel Thomas Harding, one of the founding fathers of the industrial revolution in Leeds.
Its distinctive towers, modelled on the Giotto tower in Florence and the Lamberti tower in Verona, have been a landmark on the Leeds skyline ever since.
Chris Hilton, Holbeck Urban Village project leader for the regeneration agency Yorkshire Forward, said redevelopment of the site was expected to set new standards in sustainable urban design which would make the most of the prominent waterfront location to maximise opportunities for leisure and recreation.
Mike Finkhill, director of ISIS, said: "We are thrilled to have been selected by Yorkshire Forward as the development partner for Tower Works. "The Tower Works site is an integral part of the Holbeck Urban Village renaissance programme."
