What was your first job?

At 16 I started with Revell Ward in Huddersfield as office junior with Peter Sergeant who became president of R3.

If you weren’t in your present position, what would you be doing?

I would be a draftsman, because at 16 I took the apprenticeship alongside the role with Revell Ward but decided to take the insolvency route.

What’s the worst mistake you’ve ever made?

Having the potential to be a professional footballer. As a junior the worst mistake I ever made was not going to Tottenham Hotspur to train for a week. I’d started a £30 a week job at Revell and didn’t want to let them down.

What’s your ideal day away from the office?

Playing golf somewhere nice and warm. I love the sporting element of recreation time.

Name one person you’d like to have dinner with and why?

My wife. It would be good to spend some quality time together for once.

What was your best subject at school?

Maths. I took the O-Level a year early.

What are your hobbies?

If I’m not participating in a round of golf then I’m watching sport.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

I would probably set up a fund to invest in small businesses.

What’s your top time saving tip?

Learn to say ‘no’ which actually I am not very good at doing.

What’s the best thing about being in Yorkshire?

You don’t have to travel to get here.

What would your epitaph be?

He was here when I last saw him.
