On The Spot with Damon Bowles

Damon Bowles is the senior editorial manager with Otley-based editorial designers Words&Pictures.

What was your first job?

Writing for a tiny scientific publisher on such salubrious publications as International Pest Control and Reinforced Plastics. The office was above a fast-food outlet and, ironically, was infested with fruit flies.

If you weren't in your current position, what would you be doing?

Presenting Grand Designs. Apparently, I look a bit like Kevin McCloud. I can't see it myself.

What was your worst mistake?

Not checking my facts when reporting the closure of a bakery due to poor hygiene and a rat infestation. The owner rang me – none of it was true.

What's your ideal day away from the office?

Out in the Dales with my wife and two daughters. As a southerner, I can't believe all of this is on my doorstep.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?

James Brown – the founder of Loaded magazine and a real creative live wire. 'Mediocre' just isn't in his vocabulary. He's also a Leeds lad.

What was your best subject at school?

English – the only lesson I didn't spend looking out of the window.

What are your hobbies?

I've been learning karate for five years, but more for fun and fitness than any real desire to break concrete blocks. I also love writing short stories.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Pay off the mortgage and spend some time away with my family. I'd also like to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela – a 459-mile pilgrimage route in northern Spain.

What's your top time-saving tip?

Stop and think about what you're going to do before piling in.

What's your favourite item of clothing?

Currently, a dark blue, ribbed roll-neck jumper. It's the WWII submarine commander look.

What's your favourite time of day?

Between 7am and 8am during the summer, particularly at weekends. The world belongs to just you and the birds.

What's the best thing about being in Yorkshire?

Being able to see the moors rising above the cityscape. That, and the fact that people acknowledge each other in the street. You don't get that in London.

What would your epitaph be?

Enjoy what you have while you have it.
