On the Spot with Ed Reid

What was your first job?

Commercial graduate at British Steel. I was the only graduate to be posted to head office, working for their European sales director – daunting.

If you weren't in your present post, what would you be doing?

Owning a vineyard in south-west France, enjoying the fruits of my labour. France has been a passion of mine since studying and working there as a student.

What was your worst mistake?

Hiring someone who was superficially attractive, but just not as competent as they needed to be.

What's your ideal day away from the office?

Golf with my mates on a weekday when everyone else is working. Precious because of its rarity.

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?

John McEnroe; sublime talent, intelligent, charismatic, controversial. What more do you need?

What was your best subject at school?

Economics – how dull

What are your hobbies?

Squash, tennis, golf, coaching junior rugby and wine (if that's an allowable hobby)

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

Invest in making answer to question two a reality

What's your top time-saving tip?

Be very clear about your destination. Go there in as straight a line as possible. People who do it best are those who are very clear about what important stuff needs doing to get their business to where they want it.

What's your favourite item of clothing?

A bespoke suit from Gieves & Hawkes, which was a 30th birthday present from my wife. It still fits (just).

What's your favourite time of day?

Early morning, preferably before most people are up. It's a chance to think as well as feel slightly smug that you're benefiting from struggling out of bed so early.

What's the best thing about Yorkshire?

Brilliant people in amazing surroundings

What would you like to be your epitaph?

He gave it a very good go, and got more things right than wrong.

Ed Reid is local facilitator and coach for The Alternative Board in York and North Yorkshire.
