James Hall

James Hall is a director at NorthEdge in Leeds, which is targeting mid-market Northern businesses seeking equity funding.

What was your first job?

Filling shelves in my local wine merchants. I also did a six-day paper round for £3.10 a week.

If you weren’t in your current position, what would you be doing?

I would like to be running my own business. Failing that I would want to be a PE teacher.

What was your worst mistake?

Going down a black run on my first ever day skiing at the tender age of 35. I had only mastered left turns, so ended up two miles outside the resort.

What would your ideal day away from the office be?

Spending it with my wife and two boys and having a quick ride on the bike before they wake up!

Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?

Sean Kelly, the Irish ex-professional cyclist. He was my sporting hero when I was growing up. He rode so aggressively and with no fear.

What was your best subject at school?

Maths.

What are your hobbies?

My family and anything that keeps me fit, particularly cycling.

What would you do if you won the Lotto?

I would like to think that it wouldn’t change me. I would give money to all my family and friends and celebrate with a bottle of red wine and some Maltesers.

What’s your top time-saving tip?

Always be straight with people. It saves everyone a lot of time and wasted effort.

What’s your favourite time of day and why?

Early in the morning when your mind is free and at its most productive and imaginative.

What’s the best thing about Yorkshire?

The beer, the people and the countryside.

What would you like your epitaph to be?

He cared and did things in the right way.
