Operations start at gas-storage centre

Scottish & Southern Energy and Statoil UK have started some commercial operations at their Aldbrough gas-storage facility, in East Yorkshire.

SSE said that Aldbrough would initially provide about 60m cubic metres of capacity in two caverns, the first new gas-storage capacity in Britain for four years.

Capacity in another three caverns was expected to become available by the end of 2010, it said.

When fully commissioned, in 2012, Aldbrough would have the capacity to store up to 370 mcm in nine underground caverns. It would be able to deliver gas at a rate of 40 mcm per day and have up to 30 mcm of gas per day injected.

Statoil, part of Norway's StatoilHydro, is participating in the project with one-third of the capacity.

StatoilHydro is a major shipper in all gas pipelines from the Norwegian continental shelf to Britain.

In addition to its own gas, StatoilHydro markets gas volumes on behalf of Petoro, which manages the Norwegian state's direct financial interest on the shelf.
