Prison partnership help for offenders
ETHICAL goods firm EthicalSuperstore.com has joined forces with an online marketing company which employs inmates at a Yorkshire jail.
The partnership with Summit Media, which is based in Wolds Prison, in East Yorkshire, aims to help grow EthicalSuperstore. com's online presence, while helping prisoners turn around their lives.
Hedley Aylott, managing director of Summit, said: "From budding young programmers to those with no computer skills at all, employees come to Summit from all walks of life.
"I had a young programmer apply for a job with us. He'd previously got drunk and waved a Samurai sword at his flat-mate while studying at Sheffield University, and was given time for GBH. His life fell down. He came to Summit for two years, went back to complete his degree, got a First-Class honours and is now doing a PhD. We helped him pick his life up."
Of the 250 offenders who have worked as part of the team at Summit since its creation seven years ago, Mr Hedley says he knows of only 10 who have reoffended.
Andy Redfern, founding partner of EthicalSuperstore.com, said: "It provides a sure start and support network for those who are at their most vulnerable when the support and familiar structures of prison are removed."
Summit Media has predicted turnover will rise from 15.5m over the last financial year, to 23m for 2008-09.
