Projects on shortlist for top architects’ awards
PROJECTS from across Yorkshire are among those shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Northern Network Awards.
The total shortlist of 38 developments was drawn up from 66 entries across the northern regions.
The Yorkshire projects include: Carlton Community College in Barnsley, by BDP; Craft Hub Building in Wakefield, by Spawforths; Emm Lane New Build, MBA Suite & Resource Centre in Bradford, by Farrell & Clark; Hangingwater House in Sheffield, by Butterworth Architecture; Heslington East Campus, Cluster 1, in York, by BDP; Heslington East Campus, Ron Cooke Hub, in York, by BDP; Ireland Wood Surgery in Leeds, by P + HS Architects; Keighley Central Hall in Keighley, by Hodson Architects; Sandal Magna Community Primary School in Wakefield, by Sarah Wigglesworth and Washburn Heritage Centre in Otley, by Pearce Bottomley Architects.
The Craft Hub building in Wakefield includes new premises for Pennine Camphill Community, a specialist college providing further education and support for young people with learning difficulties.
William Taylor, college vice principal, said: “After four years of planning and waiting we have been delighted with the final building which has exceeded all our expectations and dreams.
“As a small college we feel honoured to be able to use such a striking building that has given a fresh lift to the work we do with the crafts and horticulture. The ability of the teaching staff to work closely together in a thought out space has added tremendous value to the offer that we can make to our students.
“The ‘wow’ factor on first approaching the building for everyone who sees and uses it lifts expectations and provides a wonderful feelgood factor.”
The RIBA Northern Network Award is a new award which aims to bring together all three northern regions of the RIBA in a joint initiative to celebrate and reward architecture, landscape and interior design across the North of England.
The judging panel will be visiting all short-listed entries in September and the awards will be formally presented at a gala dinner at Newcastle Civic Centre on November 4.
The judges said they were looking for schemes that worked well and impressed members of the public and will speak to users throughout the shortlisting visits.
