Ray Norris on the spot
RAY Norris is group operations director of Wakefield-based office refurbishment and fit out companies Space2Work and FP Construction.
What was your first job?
I was a dog walker for a kennels during the school holidays. If the dogs made a bid for freedom, I'd have to run round the town getting them back, which added some excitement.
If you weren't in your current position, what would you be doing?
Kids' football coach in the US.
What was your worst mistake?
Not training enough for the New York Marathon – 4hr 55min.
What's your ideal day away from the office?
A leisurely breakfast at home, a round of golf, followed by a good meal with a bottle of red.
Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?
Sting. I saw him with The Police before they were really famous and I would love to have a conversation with him about
the journey his music has taken him on.
What was your best subject at school?
Woodwork and history. Woodwork won out as my father had his own joinery business. Now we fit out offices, I've gone full circle.
What are your hobbies?
A knee injury stopped me from playing amateur football and coaching youngsters, but that passion has since been replaced with golf.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
A seat on Dragons' Den. I've loved setting up Space2Work with my partner and I'd like to help others get the same buzz.
What's your top time-saving tip?
Do it now! I don't always follow my own advice.
What is your favourite item of clothing?
Pair of jeans, a bold shirt and a comfortable sweater.
What's your favourite time of the day?
I am an early, attack-the-day kind of person, but I prefer the evening when I can wind down and relax over dinner. I'm mellow by about 8pm.
What's the best thing about Yorkshire?
The M62, westbound. I'm a Lancastrian! However I do enjoy Yorkshire's sheer diversity of landscapes, cities and cultures, though.
What would you like your epitaph to be?
He will be missed by those who knew him. Those who didn't know him, don't know what they missed.
