Ruined castle ready to be transformed
ONE of Derbyshire's best known landmarks, Riber Castle, is being transformed into 26 luxury apartments with help from a Yorkshire firm.
Originally designed and built by John Smedley as his residence in 1862, Riber Castle stands 850ft above sea level in Matlock and enjoys "the best views in Derbyshire", according to developer Alan Wright.
Having gone through several different guises over the years, including a stint as a boys' school, the castle fell into neglect before permission was granted for residential use, bringing it full circle back to its original use.
John Aistrop, Riber site manager for construction managers Mascot Management, said the outer wall structure was beginning to bow, with the cavity walls full of rubble accumulated over the years.
Leeds-based Brick-Tie supplied, installed and tested over a thousand, 500mm long, high strength stainless steel grouted anchors.
