Shadow Chancellor to speak at next Business Club meeting

Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls

Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls

POLITICAL heavyweight Ed Balls is the star guest at the next meeting of the Yorkshire Post Business Club, writes Bernard Ginns.

The Shadow Chancellor will meet with Yorkshire business leaders next Friday and tell them about his plans to kickstart growth in the UK economy.

The Business Club is an influential forum for company chairmen, chief executive, owner managers and top advisers to debate the leading issues of the day.

The issue of growth, and where it is going to come from, is top of the agenda for most executives, particularly in Yorkshire, which has been exposed to public sector spending.

Mr Balls, a former close aide to Gordon Brown while Chancellor and Prime Minister, has been calling for “decisive action” to boost economic activity.

He wants to see VAT and income tax cuts, a rise in personal allowances and higher tax credits.

Mr Balls will deliver a speech and then take questions at next Friday’s event, which takes place at DLA Piper in Leeds.
