Swedish retailer moving into region as part of UK expansion
A SWEDISH retailer today revealed that it will create around 45 jobs when it opens a store in Yorkshire next year as part of a strategy to expand across Britain.
Clas Ohlson, which sells hardware and leisure products, has signed a lease for a store in the Headrow, Leeds, which is scheduled to open in April 2010.
Clas Ohlson already has five UK stores in Croydon, Manchester, Reading, Kingston-upon-Thames and Watford.
It also recently announced plans to open a store in Liverpool.
The Leeds store will cover 23,000 sq ft and will sell more than 10,000 products from the Clas Ohlson range.
Mark Gregory, UK managing director at Clas Ohlson, said: "Leeds will be our seventh store in the UK and we are excited about even more people experiencing the Clas Ohlson brand.
"I hope Leeds shoppers will be pleasantly surprised by our value and the variety of products we offer."
A company spokesman said Clas Ohlson had a strategy of opening stores in high streets and shopping centres to sell products typically found in out-of-town shops.
The firm was founded as a mail order business by Clas Ohlson in Insjn, Sweden, in 1918. It opened its first store outside Insjn in 1989 – in central Stockholm.
In 1985 the company began trading in Norway. At first, the business was strictly mail order then in 1991 the first Norwegian store opened in Oslo. In November 2002 Clas Ohlson established its first store in Finland, and it moved into the UK In November 2008.
Clas Ohlson plans to open between 15 and 20 stores during the 2009/2010 financial year. Up to eight of these are expected to be in the UK.
The next UK catalogue will be published in Spring 2010. The company produces two catalogues a year, supplemented by periodical catalogues with the latest seasonal lines and promotions.
Clas Ohlson buys product lines from more than 30 countries and has 800 suppliers. It has been listed on the OMX Nordic Exchange since 1999.
