Toy retailer gets into growth game

MORE than 20 new retailing jobs are being created in the North by an independent toys retailer which is bucking the high street recession by expanding.

Keighley-based Conways Toymaster is creating the jobs with four new stores in Yorkshire, Teesside and Lancashire, this month after leases were agreed by the commercial property department of Harrogate law firm Barber Titleys.

The four new shops, which includes the Victoria Shopping Centre in Harrogate and The Mall in Barnsley, will create about six new jobs each.

Gordon Walker, a buyer at the family-run business, said: "We are an independent retailer offering traditional and TV-advertised toys for everyone from pre-school age children to jigsaws for adults." Conways Toymaster, which has 100 staff, was founded in Cavendish Street, Keighley, by Barry Walker in 1972 and is part of a 300-strong independent buying group of Toymaster-branded shops throughout Britain and Ireland.

The business traded as a single store in Keighley until 1999 but has expanded in the last decade opening stores including Otley, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield as well as outlets in department stores in Sheffield, Liverpool, Sunderland and Hexham.

Managing partner with Barber Titleys, Harrogate, commercial property lawyer, Richard Davis said: "Conways Toymaster is creating jobs in such difficult times and adding variety to a growing number of northern shopping centres."
