Woodbuds aims for head start with eco range

START-UP Woodbuds is on an eco-friendly mission.

Based in Burley-in-Wharfedale in West Yorkshire, the business is currently selling sustainably sourced wood head phones, but it plans to expand its product range.

The ear phones are made from sustainable plantation hardwood, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and bio-plastic is used for the cables. The firm also ensures that all its packaging is made from recyclable material.

And Woodbuds works alongside the Woodlands Trust, planting a tree in the UK for every 100 products it sells.

Chris Holmes is the founder of the business and he runs it with his friend and business partner Simon Inman.

Mr Holmes said Woodbuds has clocked up more than 200 orders since its website went live a month and a half ago.

Mr Holmes said: “It’s been really good so far. We’ve had orders from America, Sweden, Austria, Italy and France, which is pretty crazy since we’ve only just started and it’s small. We feel proud to see our head phones go all over the world.

“We’ve got other products we’ve already designed and are testing at the moment, under the Woodbuds umbrella, and all with the ambition of planting for trees.

“We’ve got a target to plant 1,000 trees in two years which would be great and so the more products we have, the more of a range we have, the more that people will buy, and potentially the more trees we can plant. So it’s just an idea to do something good and let people have a product that’s eco-friendly.”

Woodbuds has also joined ‘1 per cent for the Planet’, a network of more than 1,200 companies which donate 1 per cent of their sales to a network of more than 3,000 environmental organisations.

The hope is that the Woodbud products will go into retailers in the future. But Mr Holmes said: “It’s about finding the right type of retailer though.

“To be honest, big high street volume stuff is not where we’re at. We’re more about trying to find people who care about what we’re doing.

“It’s all about just creating something that’s cool and eco-friendly.

“It’s something I started because I wanted to do something good. It’s not about making as much money as possible. Quite the opposite. If I was doing that I wouldn’t be giving some of the money we make away and I wouldn’t be planting a tree.

“I think we are doing something quite unique.”

The Woodbuds head phones are manufactured in the Far East.

The majority shareholder of Woodbuds is Mr Holmes, while Mr Inman owns the remaining 20 per cent.
