Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards 2008: Breath of fresh air brings success to UK's fastest-growing ventilation supplier

THE desire to improve indoor air quality in the home has reaped huge rewards for one Yorkshire company.

EnviroVent has become the UK's fastest-growing domestic manufacturer and supplier of ventilation products, which are designed to improve indoor air quality and to eliminate condensation and black mould.

The company, based in Harrogate, won the Companies Under 10m Turnover category in the Excellence in Business Awards on Friday night.

Nick Heaton, managing director, said: "It's fantastic. EnviroVent has been growing considerably over the last few years.

"We employ 125 people in Harrogate now. We don't seem to be affected by the credit crunch but we are not complacent. We have a lot of plans in place to make sure we continue the growth."

The business has quadrupled turnover from 2m to 8m since 2004 and is making a pre-tax profit of 13.5 per cent.

Originally established by Frank Farmer in 1987 as a specialist producer of condensation control units, the business has amassed a powerful track record and reputation due to the environmental benefits, innovative design and performance of its products. A "champion" of improving air quality, EnviroVent's senior personnel sit on the government advisory panels which examine environmental impact.

The company was launched in 1997 and became a plc the year after. Its biggest milestone to date was in August 2007 when EnviroVent became an integral part of the Soler and Palau Group, a world leader in ventilation, following a management buy-out led Mr Heaton.

In the same year EnviroVent launched its Lifetime Range, with packaging made from recycled materials and incorporating design features that minimise energy consumption, lifecycle costs and the impact on landfill.

All of the company's products are designed to be long-lasting, low maintenance and energy efficient, reflecting its eco-friendly approach to ventilation.

It designs and manufactures all products at its Hornbeam Business Park base and supplies predominantly to the social housing sector, selling to more than 400 housing associations and regeneration bodies.

Heightened concerns about landfill space prompted EnviroVent to revolutionise extractor fan technology and create sustainable, low-maintenance products. Its Filterless Fan, launched in 2004, scooped Domestic Ventilation Product Finalist of the Year at that year's Heating and Ventilation awards.

The company has enjoyed good growth over the past four years, with sales increasing by 30 per cent in a flat market and the number of employees rising from 40 to 110.

The company also quadrupled the size of its premises in November 2006, and now has a dedicated research and development department to seek out complementary environmental products.

Earlier this year, EnviroVent launched an ultra-efficient heat recovery system as well as a new air source heat pump that aims to save householders up to 40 per cent on their heating bills by delivering warm air around the rest of the home using the latest heat pump technology.

EnviroVent's commitment to expanding its international reach has seen it win a UKTI International Trade Award for Best New Exporter in 2008, by tripling exports in two years to countries including France, Ireland and Scandinavia.
